A simple way to make runes
A simple way to make runes.
Well, if you are not keen on shop brought runes, or the standard rune symbols, then why not make your own.
The following instructions are the way I made my own, but you can make yours anyway you choose.
First, I chose the symbols. These symbols would have to mean something to you.
An example would be, an open book. This means to me that something is continuing, studies or half way through a project.
It can also mean information you must obtain. Depending on where it fell on the cloth, (explained further down the page) it would give a slightly different meaning.
If it fell in West, Water, then the information is flowing steadily and easily, or your studies are going smoothly and not to panic. Water is a flowing sign.
If it fell in the South, Fire, then it would have a stronger meaning. Concentrate harder on your studies, the information you seek could be either fantastic or disasterous. Fire is a strong sign.
If it fell in the North, Earth, then it would mean your studies do need some more work, maybe research more, write more, go more indepth. Or the information you are seeking is not as bad as you think. Earth means grounded, stable, deep.
If it fell in the East, Air, then your studies are going well but be carefull not to daydream, which you may have a tendency to do. All your hard work could be lost if you don't concentrate more. Or the information you are seeking means nothing to what you may think it does. Things are going steadily but be careful of storms. Be prepared for the bad days as well as the good days. Air also means flowing but can be stormy.
I carried on choosing the designs for my runes, all meant something to me, an open book, fish, sun, earth, star, animal, I also chose to have 13 runes,
as I believe the number thirteen is a magical number, also a lucky number. (I was born at number thirteen, so it must be lucky for me!!!)
I decided to use wood to make my runes.
We have an Ash tree outside our house that has to come down. It is too close to the house and causing damage to the roof. So we asked it if we could take a branch, gave it an offering, some tree food, and we used this to make my runes.
The branch is only thin, once the bark is stripped and the wood is sanded. So take it into account if you are choosing a branch that it will be thinner when you have finished making them. I drew the pictures on the wood with a pencil, then applied 2 coats of strong clear varnish.
My Runes are small and light enough to put in my pocket, which is what I wanted.
I also made a cloth depicting the quarters, (North, South, East & West with corresponding elements, earth, fire, air & water).
This makes the reading of the runes varied and interesting.
It may sound very simple but it works. I wanted something as natural as possible, easy to make and easy to understand, as I said, it works for me. But don't be affraid to experiment. make your runes out of anything. After all, runes are the pictures/symbols, not what they are made of, and what you put them on is up to you. There is no rule to say runes have to be on wood, clay, glass, stone. It can be anything you want. Even paper.
You also don't need a cloth, but I find it helps when reading a rune to give it emphasis and a difference to the meaning.
Anyway, have fun, experiment. Let me know how you get on. If there is anything you didnt understand, just email me on info@thesleepingstone.com
Peace and Love. Maxine.
ps. I call them Druid Runes because I am a Druid and I designed and made them. But they can be called anything you wish when you make your own.
